Comparison methodologyFormulas, assumptions & what we exclude
Formulas
- Est. Value / Year = miles per year × HK$0.10 — the same assumed value on every column so rows compare fairly.
- Est. Net Yield / Year = Est. Value / Year minus a year of platform fees — not money paid to you.
- Fee Cost / Mile = a year of platform fees ÷ miles per year — lower is better.
- The fee cost per mile and estimated net yield guide is the full explainer for these two columns.
Assumptions
- HK$0.10 per mile is a conservative round figure for saver-ticket value — not a bank rate and not cash paid to you.
- Platform fees and earn rates follow published platform pages; confirm live pages before paying rent. Freshness: see Platform rates verified beside Comparison.
- Each column uses one modeled card route and published fee structures for side-by-side comparison.
- Rently Card and Rently FPS use base published earn rates unless Rently launch promo is on (launch cohort rates; first 288 signups).
- Dimension badges rank each column's primary modeled route (KeyChain dual HSBC from HK$10,000 rent; Rently Card includes HeyMax; RentSmart SC Cathay only) — not one card everywhere. KeyChain Visa-only miles after the cap are under Only have HSBC Visa Signature? and are not used for badges.
- KeyChain Pay cap-breach months: whole-number Visa/EveryMile % sliders match the app; HKD per card is that % of monthly gross (rent + 1.8% fee), not raw cap-fill dollars alone.
Not included
- Card annual fees, welcome bonuses, and what you get when you redeem.
- Foreign-card FX and overseas processing fees (often ~1–3% on non-HK cards paying HK rent).

Frequently asked questionsWhat renttomiles is, net yield, and comparison badges
- What is renttomiles.com?
- renttomiles.com is a free, independent calculator that compares four Hong Kong rent-payment paths for airline and Max Miles: KeyChain Pay, RentSmart, Rently Card, and Rently FPS. It does not process rent payments or give financial advice.
- Which rent platforms does the calculator compare?
- KeyChain Pay, RentSmart, Rently Card, and Rently FPS. Enter monthly rent once; every column uses the same input so you can compare fees, miles, fee cost per mile, and estimated net yield side by side.
- How is Est. Net Yield / Year calculated?
- Est. Net Yield / Year is Est. Value / Year minus a year of platform fees. Est. Value / Year is annual miles × HK$0.10 on every column. HK$0.10 per mile is a comparison assumption for saver redemptions — not a bank rate and not cash paid to you. Fee Cost / Mile is a year of platform fees ÷ miles per year — lower is better. The fee cost per mile and estimated net yield guide walks through both formulas.
- Does renttomiles pick a winning platform?
- No. The calculator shows independent badges such as lowest service fee, most annual miles, highest estimated net yield, and lowest fee cost per mile. It does not select an overall winner.
- KeyChain Pay vs RentSmart — which metrics matter?
- Start with the card you already hold, then read fee cost per mile and estimated net yield for your rent. KeyChain Pay’s modeled route centres on HSBC miles cards and an annual spend cap. RentSmart’s modeled route centres on the Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard at HK$6 = 1 Asia Mile with a lower service fee on that rail. Run both columns with your rent rather than picking from the fee percentage alone. The KeyChain Pay vs RentSmart vs Rently guide walks through fees, miles, fee cost per mile, and estimated net yield for those paths.
- Rently Card vs Rently FPS — when does FPS win?
- Rently Card stacks card miles (modeled on SC Cathay) with HeyMax Max Miles on base rent, at a higher card fee. Rently FPS pays by bank transfer on Basic / Standard / Premium fee tiers and earns Max Miles on base rent. FPS often looks better if you will not put rent on a miles card, or if card fees wipe out the dual-stack. Toggle the launch promo on the calculator only if you are in that cohort; otherwise compare base rates. The Rently Card vs Rently FPS guide walks through Basic, Standard, and Premium at a worked rent.
- How does the HSBC spend cap change KeyChain Pay miles for the year?
- The KeyChain Pay column models HSBC Visa Signature (Reward+ Home) until the annual cap, then HSBC EveryMile at a weaker earn. Est. Miles / Year follows that 12-month card route — it is not simply 12 × the first month. If you only have Visa Signature, use the “Only have HSBC Visa Signature?” note on the KeyChain column; dual-card years earn more in the model.
- Is Est. Net Yield cash back?
- No. It is travel value after platform fees under a shared HK$0.10-per-mile assumption so columns stay comparable. It is not money paid to your bank account. The fee cost per mile and estimated net yield guide shows why a negative figure means fees beat the assumed mile value.
- Can I earn Asia Miles by paying rent in Hong Kong?
- Yes, through rent-payment platforms when your card and the platform’s earn rules allow it — for example RentSmart or Rently Card modeled on the Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard, or KeyChain Pay via HSBC miles cards. Always confirm current earn rates and exclusions in the app and with your issuer before you pay. The pay rent and earn miles guide explains how the platforms work.
- How often are platform rates verified?
- See the “Platform rates verified” line beside Comparison (currently Oct 2026). Fees and promos change; confirm live terms on KeyChain Pay, RentSmart, and Rently before each payment.
- Does my landlord need to register?
- On the major Hong Kong rent-payment platforms, the landlord typically receives a bank or FPS transfer and does not need to sign up. Check the platform you choose for its current payout rules and timing so rent is not late.
- Does renttomiles include referral links?
- Some insight links and signup codes may earn renttomiles a referral benefit. They never change the numbers in the comparison table. Treat codes as optional and read each offer’s terms.

HSBC Red Hot Seasonal Timing
Up to +4,000 milesHSBC runs winter and summer spend challenges in Reward+. HSBC Visa Signature rent via KeyChain Pay usually counts; HSBC EveryMile usually does not. Typical windows are January–February and July–August.
Setup: In Reward+, allocate extra RewardCash to Home under Red Hot Rewards of Your Choice (RYC). The KeyChain Pay column assumes HSBC Visa Signature (RYC: Home) at 3.6%.
Hitting Tier 2 in both windows can add about 200 RC (2,000 miles) each, or 400 RC (4,000 miles) a year. Rent can cover that baseline so dining and overseas spend can still take the extra 3–6% RC. Tiers are personal — check Reward+.
