How to read fee cost per mile and estimated net yield
Platform rates verified Oct 2026
Paying Hong Kong rent through a platform adds a service fee. The miles are not free. renttomiles shows four paths — KeyChain Pay, RentSmart, Rently Card, and Rently FPS — from the same monthly rent, so the columns compare fairly.
This page teaches two columns: Fee Cost / Mile and Est. Net Yield / Year. It does not choose a platform. For which path fits the cards you already hold, read KeyChain Pay vs RentSmart vs Rently. For Rently’s bank transfer versus the card, read Rently Card vs Rently FPS.
Estimates only — not financial advice. Confirm the live fee in each app before you pay. Rates on renttomiles were verified Oct 2026 and can change. This guide does not name an overall winner.
What the two columns mean
These are the formulas on the homepage comparison methodology, rates verified Oct 2026. The same answers sit in the homepage FAQ.
- Est. Value / Year
- Miles per year × HK$0.10. The same assumed value is on every column so the rows compare fairly.
- Est. Net Yield / Year
- Est. Value / Year minus a year of platform fees. This is not money paid to you.
- Fee Cost / Mile
- A year of platform fees ÷ miles per year. Lower is better.
HK$0.10 per mile is a comparison assumption for saver-ticket value. It is not a bank rate and not cash paid to you. Est. Net Yield is not cash back. renttomiles does not pick an overall winner. Badges are per dimension: lowest fee, most miles, highest estimated net yield, and lowest fee cost per mile.
Why the fee percentage alone misleads
A lower percentage fee can still lose on fee cost per mile if the miles are thin. At HK$10,000 a month, with the launch promo off, RentSmart’s service fee is 1.6% (HK$160 a month). KeyChain Pay’s fee is 1.8% (HK$180 a month). RentSmart’s fee cost per mile is HK$0.096. KeyChain Pay’s is HK$0.053, because the modeled miles are 40,428 against RentSmart’s 20,000. The cheaper percentage is not the cheaper mile.
A higher mile total can still show a negative estimated net yield when fees exceed mile value at HK$0.10. The worked table below is the place to see that. More miles is not automatically better after fees.
Launch promos change earn rates. They do not change what the formulas mean. Leave the promo off unless you are in that cohort. The first-288 detail is on Rently Card vs Rently FPS.
Worked example at HK$10,000 monthly rent
Same assumptions as the live calculator: launch promo off, Rently FPS on Premium, miles valued at HK$0.10. HK$0.10 per mile is a comparison assumption for saver-ticket value. It is not cash paid to you and not a bank rate. As shown on renttomiles, rates verified Oct 2026. Re-run with your rent.
| Path | Service fee / month | Est. miles / year | Fee cost / mile | Est. net yield / year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KeyChain Pay | HK$180 | 40,428 | HK$0.053 | HK$1,883 |
| RentSmart | HK$160 | 20,000 | HK$0.096 | HK$80 |
| Rently Card | HK$280 | 30,560 | HK$0.110 | −HK$304 |
| Rently FPS (Premium) | HK$230 | 30,000 | HK$0.092 | HK$240 |
- Most annual miles: KeyChain Pay
- Highest est. net yield: KeyChain Pay
- Lowest fee cost per mile: KeyChain Pay
- Lowest service fee: RentSmart
Those badges are independent. None of them is an overall winner. A different rent, a different FPS tier, or the launch-promo toggle can move them. Rently FPS in this table is Premium (2.3%), the tier the homepage calculator opens on.
At this rent, Rently Card’s estimated net yield is negative (−HK$304) on base rates, with 30,560 estimated miles. A year of Card fees is HK$3,360. Estimated mile value at HK$0.10 is HK$3,056. Fees are larger, so the column is negative: under the HK$0.10 assumption you pay more in platform fees over the year than the assumed saver value of those miles. That figure is not cash taken from a bank account.
Fee cost per mile is the check against “I got more miles.” More miles can still be the expensive miles. Read that column beside the mile total.
One check, using KeyChain Pay only, to show the formula. HK$180 × 12 = HK$2,160 of platform fees. HK$2,160 ÷ 40,428 miles = HK$0.053 per mile, which is the Fee Cost / Mile on that row.
As shown on renttomiles, rates verified Oct 2026. Re-run with your rent.

How to use the metrics
- Start with the card or payment style you already have. HSBC miles cards point toward KeyChain Pay. A Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard points toward RentSmart or Rently Card. Bank transfer only points toward Rently FPS. KeyChain Pay vs RentSmart vs Rently walks through that choice.
- Compare Fee Cost / Mile across the columns at your rent. Lower is better.
- Check Est. Net Yield / Year. If it is negative under the shared HK$0.10 assumption, you are paying more in platform fees than the assumed saver value of those miles.
- Adjust for your own mile valuation only in your head. If you redeem richer than HK$0.10, the result looks better to you. If you redeem poorer, it looks worse. This site does not store a personal valuation. The columns stay on HK$0.10.
- Confirm fees and earn rules in the platform app and with your issuer before you pay. Not every card earns on every rent platform. Issuers publish exclusions. This page does not keep a denylist.
- Ignore referral codes as a way to change the maths. Homepage Insights may show a code. Those codes never change the comparison numbers.
What these metrics leave out
The homepage methodology lists these under “Not included.” Fee cost per mile and estimated net yield do not cover them:
- Card annual fees, welcome bonuses, and what you get when you redeem.
- Foreign-card FX and overseas processing fees.
- Timing risk if you pay too close to the rent due date. Each platform states its own settlement window. Read that page. This guide does not invent a processing time.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the fee percentage and skipping fee cost per mile.
- Treating estimated net yield as cash in the bank.
- Using launch-promo miles when you are not in that cohort.
- Copying an older fee table, including an old cashback roundup, without checking the 2026 apps and the rates line on renttomiles.
- Assuming every card earns on every rent platform. Issuers publish exclusions. Check the terms. This page does not keep a denylist.
- Confusing this tenant figure — estimated net yield after platform fees — with a landlord’s property “net rental yield.” They are different calculations.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Fee Cost / Mile on renttomiles?
- Fee Cost / Mile is a year of platform fees divided by estimated miles for the year. Lower is better. It is the platform fee paid for each modeled mile, not a bank redemption rate and not cash paid to you. The same formula is used on every column so the rows compare fairly. Rates verified Oct 2026.
- What is Est. Net Yield / Year?
- Est. Net Yield / Year is Est. Value / Year minus a year of platform fees. Est. Value / Year is miles per year × HK$0.10. HK$0.10 per mile is a comparison assumption for saver-ticket value, used on every column. Estimated net yield is not money paid to you.
- Is Est. Net Yield cash back?
- No. It is travel value after platform fees under a shared HK$0.10-per-mile assumption so columns stay comparable. It is not cash back and not money paid to your bank account.
- Why does renttomiles use HK$0.10 per mile?
- HK$0.10 per mile is a comparison assumption for saver-ticket value. It is the same number on every column so fee cost per mile and estimated net yield compare fairly. It is not a published bank rate and not cash paid to you. If you redeem for more or less than HK$0.10, judge that in your own head. The site columns stay on HK$0.10.
- Is paying rent with a credit card for miles worth it in Hong Kong?
- Only if fee cost per mile and estimated net yield still look acceptable for your rent, your card, and the platform’s earn rules. At HK$10,000 a month, with the launch promo off and Rently FPS on Premium, Rently Card’s estimated net yield is −HK$304 on 30,560 estimated miles. A negative figure means a year of fees is larger than those miles × HK$0.10. That is an estimate, not financial advice. Enter your own rent, then confirm fees and earn rules in the app and with your issuer.
- Can Fee Cost / Mile be low while Est. Net Yield is negative?
- Not when “low” means below HK$0.10. Under the shared assumption, estimated net yield is negative exactly when fee cost per mile is above HK$0.10, because both columns use the same fees and the same miles. At HK$10,000 with the launch promo off, Rently Card’s fee cost per mile is HK$0.110 and estimated net yield is −HK$304. A lower percentage fee can still land above HK$0.10 per mile if the miles are thin. Compare the columns at your rent rather than the fee percentage alone.
- Does a higher mile total mean a better path?
- No. At HK$10,000 with the launch promo off, Rently Card shows 30,560 estimated miles and −HK$304 estimated net yield. RentSmart shows fewer miles (20,000) and HK$80. More miles is one badge. It is not an overall winner, and it does not override the fees.
- Does renttomiles pick a winning platform?
- No. renttomiles does not pick an overall winner. Badges are per dimension: lowest service fee, most annual miles, highest estimated net yield, and lowest fee cost per mile. At HK$10,000 with the launch promo off and Rently FPS on Premium, those badges can sit on different columns. None of them is an overall winner.
- Does renttomiles process my rent?
- No. renttomiles is an independent calculator only. It does not process rent payments or give financial advice.
- Where do the formulas live?
- On the homepage Comparison methodology — Formulas, Assumptions, and Not included — and in the homepage FAQ, including “How is Est. Net Yield / Year calculated?” and “Is Est. Net Yield cash back?”. This guide uses those same formulas. Rates verified Oct 2026.
